Duong Dong doesn’t have the untouched beaches of Bai Sao or the floating fishing villages of Rach Vem. Its beauty comes from something different. It is the beauty of everyday life.
In the early morning, fishing boats return to the river after spending the night at sea. Local seafood markets come alive as fresh catches are unloaded. Throughout the day, motorcycles fill the streets, neighborhood cafés buzz with conversation, and family-owned restaurants serve locals alongside visitors.
As sunset approaches, residents gather along Bach Dang Park and Dinh Cau to enjoy the sea breeze while watching the fishing boats head back toward the harbor. After dark, the night market transforms the town into one of the liveliest places on the island, filled with food stalls, souvenirs, and the aroma of grilled seafood.
Duong Dong may not be the quietest part of Phu Quoc, but it is undoubtedly the place where you can experience the island’s daily rhythm most vividly.
Places You Shouldn’t Miss in Duong Dong
Dinh Cau & Bach Dang Park
This is easily the most iconic part of Duong Dong. Bach Dang Park stretches along the mouth of the Duong Dong River and offers a pleasant waterfront promenade, especially in the late afternoon.
Next to the park stands Dinh Cau, a centuries-old seaside shrine that has protected local fishermen for generations. From the rocky headland surrounding the temple, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the sea and one of the island’s most beautiful sunsets.
Duong Dong Market
Duong Dong Market is the largest traditional market on Phu Quoc. Unlike the night market, this is where local people shop every day.
The market is busiest early in the morning when vendors sell fresh seafood, tropical fruits, vegetables, spices, and household goods. Walking through the market provides an authentic look at local life beyond the tourist attractions.

If you’re searching for authentic local food, this is the street to visit.

Tran Hung Dao Street & Long Beach
Running parallel to the western coastline, Tran Hung Dao Street is lined with hotels, beach resorts, cafés, beach bars, and restaurants.
It offers easy access to Long Beach while remaining only a few minutes from the center of Duong Dong.
Many travelers choose this area because it combines beautiful sunsets with convenient access to the rest of town.
What Does a Perfect Day in Duong Dong Look Like?
A day in Duong Dong starts early. Wake up before sunrise and take a walk along Bach Dang Park while fishing boats slowly return from the sea. Grab a Vietnamese coffee and watch the town come to life.
Later in the morning, explore Duong Dong Market or visit one of the island’s traditional fish sauce factories to learn about one of Phu Quoc’s oldest industries.
At lunchtime, head to 30 Thang 4 Street to enjoy authentic local dishes that residents eat every day. During the afternoon, relax by the waterfront before walking to Dinh Cau to watch the sunset over the Gulf of Thailand.
As evening falls, spend a few hours wandering through the Phu Quoc Night Market, sampling local snacks, shopping for souvenirs, and soaking up the lively atmosphere. It may sound like a simple day, but that’s exactly what makes Duong Dong special.

Should You Stay in Duong Dong?
For first-time visitors, the answer is usually yes.
Advantages:

Disadvantages:
- Busier than Ong Lang or Ham Ninh

If you’re looking for quiet beaches and a slower pace, Ong Lang or Ham Ninh may suit you better. However, if convenience is your priority, Duong Dong remains the best base for exploring Phu Quoc.
Where Should You Stay in Duong Dong?
Near the Beach
Tran Hung Dao Street and Long Beach are ideal for travelers who want easy beach access and beautiful sunsets while staying close to town.
Near the Night Market
Around Bach Dang Street, Dinh Cau, and the Night Market, you’ll find countless restaurants, cafés, and entertainment within walking distance.
This area is perfect if you enjoy exploring on foot after sunset.
Quiet Neighborhoods
The southern end of Tran Hung Dao Street and the area toward Cua Lap offer a more relaxed atmosphere.
You’ll still be close to the town center while avoiding much of the traffic and noise.
Best Area for Food Lovers
If your trip revolves around eating, stay near 30 Thang 4 Street.
Many of Phu Quoc’s most famous local restaurants are concentrated here, making it easy to sample Bun Quay, Bun Ken, crab noodle soup, seafood, and other local specialties.
My Favorite Things About Duong Dong
Duong Dong may not be the most spectacular destination on Phu Quoc. But it’s probably the place I return to most often. Maybe that’s because it always feels familiar.
Watching Sunset at Dinh Cau
Few places capture the spirit of Phu Quoc better than Dinh Cau at sunset.
Sitting on the rocks, watching fishing boats slowly return home while the sun disappears beyond the horizon, never gets old.
Drinking Coffee by the River
I enjoy sitting at one of the riverside cafés in the morning or late afternoon. The river flows quietly, boats drift past, and life unfolds at its own gentle pace.
There’s nothing particularly extraordinary about it. That’s exactly why I love it.
Walking Through Bach Dang Park
Early mornings here are wonderfully peaceful.
Local residents exercise along the waterfront while fishing boats rest beside the river, creating a scene that feels authentic rather than designed for tourists.
Visiting the Morning Fish Market
If you’re willing to wake up early, you’ll discover a completely different side of Duong Dong.
Fresh seafood is unloaded directly from the boats, buyers negotiate prices, and the entire harbor comes alive with energy. It’s one of the most genuine local experiences on the island.
Eating Bun Quay and Crab Noodle Soup
These are probably the two dishes I eat most whenever I’m back in Duong Dong. No luxury restaurant is needed.
Just a simple neighborhood eatery on 30 Thang 4 Street serving a steaming bowl of Bun Quay or rich crab noodle soup is enough to remind me why I love Phu Quoc.

Some people come to Phu Quoc for luxury resorts.
Others spend their entire vacation exploring the southern islands or modern entertainment complexes.
